What Are Full & Partial Dentures?

The use of dentures goes way back—and we’re not just talking about your great-grandparents’ time. There are records of dentures from the 7th century BC in Etruscan tombs, and the first porcelain dentures popped up in the late 18th century. Of course, modern dentures mimic the look and feel of real teeth far better than any of those from ancient history.

Full vs. Partial Dentures

Today, dentures come in two main categories: full dentures and partial dentures. Full dentures get their name because they’re made to replace a full arch of teeth, either the whole row of upper teeth or the whole row of lower teeth. Sometimes full dentures are also called complete dentures.

Partial dentures, on the other hand, are used to replace multiple teeth when there are still some natural teeth remaining. Partial dentures are made with a metal frame, which allows for them to fit around whatever teeth someone still has with clasps.

The main factor in determining whether you need full or partial dentures is how many teeth you have left and how healthy those are. It’s possible that you still have some natural teeth left but they’re in such poor condition that it’s better to remove them completely in order to get full dentures.

It’s best to speak with your dentist to review your options. They can examine the state of your oral health and recommend either full or partial dentures, or another restorative treatment, for you based on their clinical findings, your goals, and your budget.
