Your Child’s First Trip to the Dentist

December 18, 2015 4:43 am
Your child’s baby teeth are just as prone to tooth decay as your permanent teeth are. Severe decay in one of your child’s teeth might require extraction. This greatly increases the chances that your child will develop alignment issues when their permanent teeth emerge. In most children, the first baby teeth start to emerge around four to six months old. The ADA recommends that you schedule your child’s first dental checkup at some point before your child’s first birthday. Their first visit to the dentist sets the tone for future visits, so try to keep an upbeat and positive attitude. During checkup, the dentist will inspect your child’s mouth to make sure everything is healthy and developing normally. It’s a great opportunity for you to ask any oral development questions and to get your child comfortable with the idea of going to the dentist. Scheduling the appointment in the morning shortly after your child wakes up from nap improves the chances of a positive experience. A tired child is more likely to fuss and complain. Try to keep your mood upbeat and positive, as your child will tune into your emotions. If your child is ready for their first trip to the dentist, please call our office at 870-201-8863 to schedule an appointment. We look forward to meeting your child and helping them get a good start on a health mouth!
