Winter can be chilly, but one of the last things you want is for your chattering teeth to feel sensitive! We’ll share our tips on preventing and treating tooth sensitivity so you have one less thing to worry about this winter season.

What Is Tooth Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is an uncomfortable sensation that you can feel when the more sensitive layers of your tooth are exposed to hot or cold temperatures, pressure, and/or sugar. Tooth sensitivity can be caused by the following:

  • Decay – Tooth decay means the outermost layers of your teeth are damaged, exposing the sensitive inner tooth. Decay and cavities are caused by poor oral hygiene and a sugary diet, which both encourage bacteria to accumulate and produce enamel-destroying acids.
  • Acidic Foods & Beverages – Soda, sour candy, wine, citrus, and tomato-based sauces can slowly erode your enamel, which increases your chance of decay and tooth sensitivity.
  • Trauma – Your teeth are likely more sensitive if you grind your teeth or have chipped, cracked, or broken teeth.
  • Brushing Too Hard – Using a toothbrush with firm bristles instead of soft and/or brushing your teeth too hard can damage the enamel on your teeth. So don’t vigorously saw your toothbrush back and forth to “finish faster”; gently brush for two minutes each time.

How to Relieve Tooth Sensitivity

It’s first necessary to determine what might be causing your sensitivity before we can create a plan to address it. For example, a soft-bristled toothbrush and sensitivity toothpaste might be all you need! Or, if you have decay, treatment could range from a filling to root canal therapy and a crown or even extraction. A custom nightguard may be necessary if you grind your teeth at night.
